TESTEMONIALS

"" I am studying with Mateja for a good year. I am of advanced age. I was not satisfied with my singing voice in a singing circle. This one year of voice exercises, guided by the patience and competence of my teacher Mateja, helped me a lot to strengthen my vocal cords practice. I also enjoy singing with others in a singing circle again and I have gained vocal confidence. The practice session every week is a highlight for me because of Mateja's proving attention. I always feel an improvement in expression and in volume."

Monika Müller

"Mateja is great! Yes, that’s it in short. I’m very happy working with her, because she combines several qualities as a teacher, which I value highly: I need to be able to like and harmonize with the person, to achieve true benefit of the teaching. When that part is working, the communication of technique and skills flows easily. Mateja scores highly on both points!

She has a lovely spirit and teaches with patience, yet with steady focus on the task: Helping the student to acquire good singing techniques.

I’m looking forward to more!."

Christian

"I've been taking singing lessons with Mateja for over a year and I'm more than enthusiastic. After we initially only dealt with the basics and techniques, I was now able to make the recordings for my first own songs. 2. Structured, experienced and motivating, that's how I would describe Mateja's lessons. Within a very short time I learned to appreciate my own voice. Becoming hoarse and not hitting a note was yesterday."

"Dear Mateja, I came to you to have fun while singing. I had no previous knowledge and knew no grades. You love what you do and it shows in the way you teach. Through your open, positive way you made me come out of myself and dare to sing. I always look forward to the private lessons with you. During the time I'm completely with myself, singing and forgetting everything around me, switch off completely and feel wonderful after every lesson. Thanks"

"I appreciate Mateja's lessons very much, they are well structured and methodologically varied, the learning atmosphere is relaxed and positive, Mateja adapts to my individual possibilities, I feel supported and motivated. I'm constantly improving my singing technique and have gained more confidence in my voice. With Mateja's guidance, I developed a helpful warm-up routine. Many Thanks!"

"Mateja is a very talented singer and singing teacher. The classes are a lot of fun and even though they are online I don't feel like anything is missing. Mateja is very patient and tries very hard and is happy with me about my progress. In order to be able to practice on my own, I received several piano recordings of the songs we sing, which are very helpful for this. I can only recommend working with her.”

TEACHING CONCEPT – Mateja Potočnik

As a voice pedagogue, it is of central importance to me to approach each individual student with systematic and well-founded knowledge, supporting them based on their personal prerequisites, abilities, skills, and talents. Students should become familiar with the essential features of the anatomical functioning of the vocal instrument—supported by relevant professional and scientific literature. Based on these insights, they gradually transfer this knowledge to their own bodies and, with my guidance, develop awareness of the breathing process, inner auditory imagination, and ultimately vocal sound production.

A central focus of my teaching is breathing technique. Students deepen their natural inhalation, become aware of the musculature involved, and learn to maintain a stable and controlled airflow. This keeps the diaphragm active for longer, forming the basis for free tone production (appoggio). In addition, I integrate breathing exercises from Yoga and Qi Gong, which I regularly practice before performances myself. These methods not only encourage deeper and more natural breathing but also support calmness, concentration, and physical presence—skills essential for concerts, auditions, and artistic projects.

Another important component of my teaching is vocal hygiene and the development of efficient and healthy practice strategies. Many students practice without clear orientation; therefore, I place great value on structured, conscious, and technically grounded work. I create individualized practice and warm-up plans with clear sequences, suitable exercises, and a defined vocal range. Since not every exercise is appropriate for every register, I always adapt the material to the respective voice type and technical situation. Targeted warm-ups serve not only to prepare the voice but primarily to support technical advancement and the development of a healthy, economical vocal function.

I teach students how to practice effectively: in short, focused sessions, with clear goals, conscious breaks, and with the help of audio and video recordings for self-reflection. Equally important is the early recognition of physical warning signs such as pressure or hoarseness.

An indispensable part of the training is the development of a differentiated inner auditory imagination. I foster this through joint listening and analysis of recordings of outstanding singers as well as through targeted demonstrations in lessons. Together, we train the perception of different vocal qualities and the analysis of the parameters that define a healthy and artistically high-quality voice: resonance and unified timbre, vocal formants, chiaro-scuro, purity of sound, freedom and vibrato, lyrical versus dramatic qualities, and clear articulation. I strengthen these parameters through individually tailored technical exercises.

When selecting vocal repertoire, I orient myself to the vocal prerequisites, technical development, and artistic needs of the students. In interpreting vocal works by international composers, students engage with literary sources by major poets and writers. They acquire knowledge of numerous languages, including German, Russian, Latin, Italian, French, Spanish, English, Slovenian, Czech, Croatian, and Serbian. They translate texts, grasp their meaning, shape them with phonetic precision, and develop an authentic artistic interpretation.

During my studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, I worked intensively with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). I systematically pass this knowledge on to my students. The IPA is a globally standardized phonetic system that represents all human speech sounds precisely. It enables singers to learn accurate pronunciation independent of spelling. Using IPA, we analyze the vowels and consonants of a text, define their exact articulation, and transfer this into clear, stylistically appropriate vocal diction.

Through music and text, students explore various emotional states and shape them on stage with the help of vocal colors, dynamic nuances, and scenic presence. They broaden their artistic range by attending concerts and opera performances, by reading relevant literature, and by engaging with other art forms.

Through dealing with the stylistic characteristics of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary periods, students gain a deeper understanding of the character, aesthetics, and modes of expression of each era. Digital competencies—such as the use of notation programs, transposition tools, or online databases—support them in preparing and researching repertoire, sheet music, poetry, and recordings.

Since artistic creation always emerges within a cultural and social context, students learn to place musical works in their historical framework, reflect on them critically, and develop a personal, reflective, and stylistically responsible interpretation.

Biography

Since February 2024, Mateja Potočnik has been singing Professor at the Conservatory for Music and Ballet Ljubljana, and in 2024/25 she also taught as a substitute professor at the Conservatory for Music and Ballet Maribor.

The Slovenian mezzo-soprano Mateja Potočnik completed her master’s degree with distinction at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin in 2018, where she had previously earned her bachelor’s degree. She began her vocal studies with Prof. Mag. Dušanka Simonović and continued at the Carinthian State Conservatory in the class of Prof. Gabriel Lipuš, graduating with distinction in 2013. She received further artistic inspiration in masterclasses with Krassimira Stoyanova, Bernarda Fink, Thomas Quasthoff, Anne Schwanewilms and Martin Bruns, and through collaborations with Wolfram Rieger, Matthias Samuil and Karola Theill.

Among her early achievements are winning the Austrian national competition Prima la Musica (2010), her debut at the Konzerthaus Klagenfurt with the Carinthian Symphony Orchestra (2011) and her appearance at the Berlin Philharmonie in Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle (2015). At the Musica Sacra Festival, she performed Mozart’s Coronation Mass in the Klagenfurt Cathedral (2017) and returned in 2025 with Haydn’s Missa Sancti Hieronymi. As part of the Ljubljana Festival, she appeared in 2017 and 2022 in the “Young Promising Singers” series with a recital in the Knights’ Hall of Križanke.

During her studies, she performed – at that time still as a soprano – roles such as Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel) and Ernestine (Salon Pitzelberger). She was awarded the Zois Scholarship and a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia for her outstanding artistic achievements.

In recent years, Potočnik has established herself particularly as a concert mezzo-soprano and as a dedicated interpreter of contemporary music. In 2023 she appeared as a soloist at Berlin’s Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church with the Berlin Chamber Orchestra. The same year she performed Nana Forte’s vocal cycle Povodni mož in Frankfurt. In 2024 she was the soloist in Tadeja Vulc’s cantatas Noetove noči and Razdvom and premiered Lojze Lebič’s new composition Srce – uganka živa.

Another focus of her artistic work is the development of new concert formats. Since 2021 she has collaborated closely with the puppet theatre Teater Štrik (Tea Kovše & Yves Brägger). In 2024 they appeared at the international puppet festival Pesta Boneka in Yogyakarta (Indonesia). That same year, Potočnik created the musical storytelling project Deklica gre na pot (The Girl Sets Out on a Journey), aimed at bringing high-quality classical music closer to marginalized communities.
